Team of the week: DU American Football

The Durham Saints are our team of the week – they’re killing it in BUCS, thanks to a renewed sense of purpose and a couple of American imports…

Not too long ago you might have been laughed at if you’d suggested the Durham University American Football Club (aka The Saints) as a contender for team of the week, but Durham’s newest performance sport program has grabbed the headlines and this weekend beat Loughborough 24-12 to jump into the quarter finals – a fine achievement!

The Saints had historically not been the most successful team in Durham, but the transition that has seen the sport become part of BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports) has given the Saints a new lease of life as a few scholarship students have joined the ranks from the USA.

America – fuck yeah!

The expertise they have brought, along with their enthusiasm, has spread quickly throughout the squad with even complete rookies gaining serious ground quickly; and The Saints carved through the league with ease finishing with a perfect 8-0 record recording scores such as 59-7 (against fellow playoff contenders Sunderland in the first game of the year) and 64-13 against ex league big boys and local rivals Newcastle.

59-7. Unlucky Sunderland

So now to the national playoffs; where the best 16 from all the local leagues around the country face it out in a straight knockout. Week one has been and gone – Loughborough dispatched 24-12 – a welcome blow to their BUCS points total!

This week, however, sees an away trip to reigning champions Birmingham, who’ve won the title more times than The Saints won in the last 3 years, a big ask, but if they pull it off they go into the semi-finals confident that they can go all the way!

Either way, the Saints will hit Klute on Sunday (as they do every week) celebrating this as their finest season yet.

Celebrating!
