New world rankings put Cardiff Uni in the top 100 best universities for 10 subjects

It also scored fifth best in the UK for media and communication studies


Cardiff University has been named in the top 100 best universities in the world for 10 subjects, according to QS World Rankings 2023.

The highest scoring subject was media and communication studies which scored 29th, also making it the fifth highest university for this subject in the UK, beating the likes of Edinburgh Uni and UCL.

Not only was the uni given a ranking but also an overall score of 82.7. This score is determined by five factors: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations by paper, international research area (by broad faculty), and H-index which looks at the impact and productivity of a department.

Cardiff also scored highly in dentistry, and whilst a specific ranking wasn’t given, it was put at between 51st and 80th place. Geography faired similarly, scoring between 51st and 100th place, with nursing also achieving the same ranking.

Only six British universities scored higher than Cardiff in dentistry, whilst 15 scored higher in geography and six scored higher in nursing.

Two more subjects made it into the top 100 without a specific ranking: architecture and built environment, and social policy. They were both put in the 51st-100th ranking with architecture and built environment being beaten by four other British unis and social policy being beaten by 11.

Other subjects that scored in the top 100 were English language and literature at 67th, which was 19th in Great Britain, pharmacy and pharmacology at 78th, placing it 13th in Great Britain, and finally, psychology at 59th, which put it at 8th in the country.
