A St Catherine’s College student was assaulted on Silver Street bridge last Sunday Morning.

In an email sent to the whole college, the Senior Tutor, Paul Hartle, detailed the attack, suggesting the fact that the student was wearing a gown may have caused the incident.

According to the email, the attacker attempted to take the student’s bike and also verbally abused him. Given the student was wearing a gown, the Senior Tutor suggested the tense environment caused by last week’s burning of a £20 note may have caused the incident.

The street is a common route to the Sidgwick Site

Hartle stated “The student was wearing his gown which may have occasioned the incident, given recent unhelpful local publicity about the stupidly arrogant behaviour of a particular student (from another college).”

Hartle further advised students to avoid wearing gowns for the time being.

“Whilst I suspect this was a random act, it might be prudent for a while at least not to wear your gown about town.”
