Students were evacuated during an exam after a TV caught fire

It happened 40 minutes into an International Politics exam

Yesterday students had to be evacuated from Hugh Owen building when writing their final exams.

The reason for the 15-20 minute evacuation wasn’t an exam paper mix up, but a fire which broke out in the building. Students were evacuated safely and were allowed extra time to finish their exam papers after the incident.

Adam Chapple, third year Interpol student was in the room when the fire alarm went off.

He told The Tab: “The alarm went off about 40 minutes into the exam. We sort of looked around trying to figure out what’s going on.

“The invigilator told us to keep writing and left. When she left the alarm went off again. Then she came back and it went off again.”

He added: “We all slightly surprised and left the room, but they let us have our phones. It was the slowest run out of a burning building you can imagine.

“We went down to the car park outside Ta Med Da. I wasn’t worried because I thought we would get extra time. It lasted for about 20 minutes I would say.

“We also got extra time in the end, 15 minutes. The alarm disrupted us for about that time. The invigilator then told us that apparently a TV caught fire which was the reason for the evacuation.”

The university have been approached for a comment.
