Unfollowing sprees and wedding snubs: Inside the drama between Miley Cyrus and her family

Miley Cyrus found herself in the middle of a family drama following her parents divorce in 2022, with her siblings choosing sides, which it seems she ultimately has too.

Her mother, Tish Cyrus, got remarried to Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell, and when the pap pics dropped of the gorgeous wedding ceremony, people couldn’t help but notice a fair few of the Cyrus family clan were not in attendance.

It has been reported that Miley’s family are “completely divided”, but how did this all begin? Here’s a look inside the ongoing feud between Miley Cyrus and her family members.

April 2022 – Tish and Bill Ray Cyrus split up

Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus were together from 1993 to 2022, despite having split up on different occasions during their marriage. In April 2022, Tish filed for divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus, citing “irreconcilable differences”, according to documents seen by People.

“It is after 30 years, five amazing children and a lifetime of memories, we have decided to go our separate ways — not with sadness, but with love in our hearts,” reads a joint statement issued by the couple via a family representative.

“We have grown up together, raised a family we can be so proud of, and it is now time to create our own paths. We will always be family and look forward to a continued and loving shared experience as friends and parents.

“We have not come to this decision lightly or quickly but with so much going on in the world, we wanted to provide some clarity and closure, so we can remain focused on what is important. With Love and Hope… Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus.”

August 2022 – Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose get engaged

Four months after confirming he and Tish were getting a divorce, Billy Ray proposed to his girlfriend Firerose, whom he began dating earlier that year.

“Billy looked at me and said, ‘Do you, do you wanna marry me?’ And I was just like, ‘Of course I do. I love you,’ ” the Australian singer told People. “He said, ‘I love you. I wanna make this official. I wanna be with you forever.’ “

September 2022 – Miley Cyrus unfollows her father on Instagram

According to The Sun, Miley and her father had a falling out after his split from her mother was announced in April 2022. Following Billy’s engagement to Firerose, Miley unfollowed her father on Instagram and he has done the same.

“Miley is all about peace but she didn’t agree with some things that her father has done. It has really escalated and they are not on good terms,” a source told the publication.

“There were words exchanged over what ­happened towards the end of Billy and Tish’s marriage, and since then, but they clearly see things very differently.”

The source continued: “Neither of them is particularly eager to make amends right now without an apology. The rest of the family are hoping it will blow over soon and they will be able to make up, but Billy and Miley are both upset.”

May 2023 – Tish announces her engagement to Dominic Purcell

Earlier this year, Tish Cyrus announced she was engaged to Prison Break star Dominic Purcell. She posted a photo with his hand around her waist as she showed off her ring, to her Instagram.

“A thousand times…. YES ❤️ @dominicpurcell,” Tish captioned the post.

August 2023 – Only Miley, Brandi and Trace attend Tish’s wedding

16 months after filing for divorce, Tish married Dominic Purcell on Saturday 19th August, with Miley as her maid of honour and her other children Brandi and Trace also in attendance.

However, Tish has two more children who were noticeably not in attendance. Noah Cyrus and her brother Braison did not attend the wedding and instead, they shared photos of them shopping as the ceremony took place.

“Miley’s family are completely divided and it’s a really sad situation. She is being very adult in it, but has found it very frustrating.

“It seems like madness to not go to your own mother’s wedding, but she was proud to be there to support her. The kids have sided with either their mum or their dad and there’s not a lot of communication between them. It has been worsening for the past year and it doesn’t look like there’s an end in sight.”

Neither family member has commented on the speculation of a feud.
