Gracie Abrams shares rare insight into her relationship with Paul Mescal and his impact on her

Gracie Abrams has opened up about her relationship with Paul Mescal, revealing the actor has had a huge influence on both her songwriting and the way she sees herself.

The pair first sparked romance rumours after being spotted together at the premiere of Gladiator 2 in November 2024, before confirming they were dating last year.

Speaking to Vogue previously, Gracie admitted she had been “worried” that being in a serious relationship with Mescal could somehow “threaten [her] drive to write music”.

However, the singer has now clarified those comments in a new interview with Rolling Stone, explaining she was surprised that people took her words to mean she felt her entire career was “threatened” by her relationship.

Instead, Gracie said Mescal has actually had a hugely positive effect on her creativity, saying he has had “the most amazing effect on my writing” and has given her “the most amount of space to reflect on everything in my life.”

She continued: “It has held a mirror to me in ways that I didn’t know a relationship with another person of any kind could. It has given me all the perspective that I could have ever hoped for, on previous relationships, on my relationship with my family, on my friendships.”

Abrams also opened up about Mescal’s involvement in her recent track Imaginary Friend, from her latest album Daughter From Hell, which was released last month.

She explained that his contribution came naturally, saying: “It wasn’t some extraordinary event. We’re a very musical household, and so there’s always something brewing … I feel lucky to be generally inspired by him as a person and by his brain.”

The singer also shared a glimpse into Mescal’s dedication as he prepares to play Paul McCartney, revealing she has watched him spend hours learning to play guitar left-handed for the role.

“(It’s been) so amazing to witness,” she said. “He’s like an alien. I mean, he’s better at guitar backwards than I have been at guitar my whole life.”
