Three strange things about the High School Catfish documentary that ‘make no sense’

People are convinced there’s more to the story

Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is the most shocking documentary to arrive on Netflix in a long time, but there are some parts that just don’t make sense.

The true story is about mum Kendra Licari, who catfished her daughter Lauryn and bombarded her with thousands of texts from a random number.

After a full police investigation and lots of students being wrongly framed, the mum finally admitted to being the catfish, but people think there’s more to the story.

How did Shawn Licari not realise Kendra lost her job?

At the end of the film, we see the moment Kendra’s husband Shawn finds out his wife is the catfish. In police cam footage on his driveway, he seems in complete shock, and not just over the text messages. The sheriff also tells Shawn that Kendra hasn’t had a job for over a year and was actually just sitting at home.

People can’t understand how he didn’t realise they had lost a whole second income. Surely he must have had some kind of inkling she hadn’t been going to work all that time?

One person wrote on Reddit: “I get it, her husband let her take care of the bills so he didn’t know things weren’t getting paid, but your wife supposedly has TWO jobs, how do you not see with your eyes you’re living on a one-person salary? That part I major side-eyed because it made no sense. You can’t really hide whole ass salaries like that.”

“How did the dad not know she wasn’t getting any income for a year and that they got evicted for her not paying rent. Doesn’t make sense,” another said on TikTok.

How did she find out the exact details from conversations at school?

A lot of the text messages contained personal information from conversations that happened at school between Lauryn, Owen, Khloe and other students. In a recent TikTok, Khloe said she would chat to her friends in science class and it would somehow end up in the messages.

Everyone is wondering the same thing, and there just isn’t an answer. One person wrote on TikTok: “Why didn’t the Unknown Number catfish documentary on Netflix go over how the mum knew about the personal conversations at school?”

“How’s she getting all these peoples numbers as well? Especially Owen’s new girlfriend, that’s weird,” someone else asked.

Kendra worked in IT, but didn’t think they could track her IP address?

In the end, Kendra was caught because police tracked the IP address of the messages to Lauryn’s house. However, the documentary said one of Kendra’s past jobs was in IT, so she must know her way around a computer. Some people have speculated she cloned Lauryn or Owen’s phones, which is how she gained access to so much personal information, but how did she not realise her IP address would be tracked?

“Everybody skipping the part where the mum was an IT person but didn’t think that her IP address could be tracked? That’s not making sense to me,” one person said on TikTok.

Someone else agreed: “Well, she must not have paid attention or done her job correctly in IT because how would she not know it would come back to her?”
