What Lauryn Licari from Netflix’s The High School Catfish is doing now, three years on

If you’ve just watched Netflix’s shocking new documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, this is what Lauryn Licari is doing now.

The film follows Lauryn, a teen who is bombarded with horrible messages from an unknown number for months. It’s all a true story, and her mum Kendra turns out to be the one behind the messages.

It all started in October 2020 when Lauryn was just 13 years old. After a brief pause, the cyberbullying continued in September 2021 and went on for the next 15 months until September 2022.

Now, it’s been three years since the investigation ended, and Lauryn is navigating life as an adult after the shocking revelation.

Lauryn is now 18 and entering a ‘new chapter’

As revealed by Netflix’s Tudum, Lauryn is now 18, has finished school and is entering a new chapter of her life as an adult.

“She is at the beginning of figuring out that she can be the one in charge, that she can make all the decisions for herself and for her relationship with her mother. I think that’s going to be a really interesting place for Lauryn to explore,” the documentary’s director Skye Borgman said.

The 18-year-old is no longer in contact with her boyfriend in the documentary, Owen. She has made her Instagram profile private and is living a quiet life, but her bio reveals she’s now dating a new guy called Zayne, and they’ve been together for more than a year.

She’s getting really close to her dad, Shawn

When her mum went to jail for over a year, Lauryn began spending a lot more time with her dad Shawn, and they’ve got really close.

Borgman added: “It’s so wonderful to see them together. It’s just a great outcome of something so tragic and so terrible that you see this really loving, really respectful relationship that the two of them have.”

To public knowledge, she still lives in the same small Michigan community, Beal City.

Lauryn still doesn’t hate her mum, Kendra

After everything happened, Lauryn still wanted to have a relationship with her mum Kendra. Now, her opinion has changed, but she still doesn’t have the hatred towards her mum that you’d expect.

“The first time we sat down with Lauryn was in the spring of 2023… and she at the time loved her mom. She just wanted her mom back in her life,” the director said. However, the filmmakers returned a year later after Kendra had been released from jail and Lauryn then “wanted to approach the relationship with more caution” in the second interview.

“She’s done a lot of pretty critical thinking, especially between that time and now. These years are such critical years for young people. She’s got the most complicated feelings to deal with. Everybody else can hate Kendra. I don’t think Lauryn can, right? It’s your mum. I mean, how do you navigate that? It’s really uncharted waters.”
