There’s one question Netflix’s shocking new documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish doesn’t answer – are Kendra and Shawn Licari still married after the shocking revelation?

The gripping film follows the true story of mum Kendra, who sent her teenage daughter Lauryn thousands of horrible messages from an unknown number.

Investigators spent months trying to track down the catfish, and eventually found it was her own mum. In the documentary, we see the moment Lauryn and her dad Shawn find out.

Kendra went to jail for 19 months and was released in August 2024. She might be out of trouble with the law, but not with her husband, or daughter.

Are Kendra and Shawn Licari still married after she catfished their daughter?

No. Shawn divorced Kendra and received full custody of Lauryn when his wife went to jail, The Cut reveals. Kendra is now living with family near Detroit, and is hardly allowed any contact with her daughter. Even less than when she was behind bars.

Kendra and Shawn met while studying at Central Michigan University, and she moved into his small house. Lauryn is their only child, and she was born in 2007.

When she went to jail, the mother apologised to her family, saying: “I am sorry for my behavior to Owen McKenny and his family. I am sorry for my behavior to Khloe Wilson and her family. I am sorry to my daughter, Lauryn, and my husband, Shawn.”

However, it clearly wasn’t enough, and the catfishing is what caused the breakdown in their relationship.

In the documentary, we see Shawn say: “I just can’t believe she would do something like that to her daughter that supposedly she loved dearly. Just makes me sick. She stabbed me in the heart, shot me in the heart, and threw it away.”

Lauryn has now grown a lot closer to her dad. The documentary’s director Skye Borgman told Tudum: “It’s so wonderful to see them together. It’s just a great outcome of something so tragic and so terrible that you see this really loving, really respectful relationship that the two of them have.”
