All the extreme measures Paul was forced to agree to so he could stay on MAFS Australia

Lots of specific rules were put in place for him, to try and prevent future violent incidents

After his shocking behaviour in the experiment, a number of measures were put in place by MAFS Australia in order for groom Paul Antoine to be allowed to stay. After he punched a wall following an argument with wife Carina, there were calls for him to be removed from the show. However, he was allowed to stay – under strict rules.

In shocking scenes, Paul admitted he’d taken his anger out on his shared apartment with Carina, after an argument. Carina said she’d slept with a rapper who was on the radio, and Paul then returned to their apartment and punched a hole in the wall.

There was apparently a lot of talk behind the scenes as to whether Paul should be removed at the time, but given Carina expressed a wish to continue, he was not. So, Paul apologised to Carina, and then told the group what had happened at the following dinner party. He was then given a stern telling off by the show’s experts.

Beyond what we saw, Paul was given a set of measures to live by whilst the show continued. Carina spoke on The MAFS Funny Podcast, and revealed exactly what these rules were. She explained Paul had to agree to them, in order to remain on the show.

“They gave us both the help that we were requiring,” she said. “He [Paul] was banned from alcohol for the rest of the series. They gave him therapy sessions every Saturday morning. There were a lot of things that had to come into place for it to be a safe environment.”

Paul also had professional help after the incident. This was external, and on top of what is provided to everyone in the experiment as standard.

Carina added: “Obviously signing up for the experiment you do all the medical testing, you go and speak to the psychologist, so he had no indication of that. I don’t think the production team would’ve put Paul himself into that environment, or any of the other contestants in the environment of unsafety. At the end of the day, I felt safe and it was up to me essentially [if he stayed].”

There were a lot of repercussions for Paul on the show, but it’s also caused a lot of drama outside the show too. There have been serious investigations into what happened. The show is currently being investigated by a watchdog, and police.

MAFS production company, Endemol Shine Australia, said: “Our first priority at all times has been the wellbeing and safety of the participants and after extensive consultation with Carina, she wanted to remain in the experiment with Paul. We continue to provide support for Carina and Paul.

“Nine and Endemol Shine take obligations in respect to the health and wellbeing of the participants of this program extremely seriously. All participants have access to the show psychologist and welfare resources during filming, during broadcast and once the program has ended.”
