Carina and Paul reflect on his behaviour and being called out at the MAFS commitment ceremony

‘I was hurt, I was confused, I was sad’

Carina and Paul have reflected on what was a bombshell commitment ceremony for them, as his behaviour was called out by the MAFS Australia experts. During the chat, the experts confronted Paul over the incidents that happened in the days prior.

In shocking scenes, Paul admitted he’d taken his anger out on his shared apartment with Carina, after an argument. Carina said she’d slept with a rapper who was on the radio, and Paul then returned to their apartment and punched a hole in the wall. After his outburst, Paul apologised to Carina, and then told the group what had happened at the following dinner party.

Then, at the commitment ceremony, Paul got a stern telling off from the MAFS Australia experts, who also gave advice to Carina. John Aiken straight up asked him why he should be kept on the show, and branded Paul’s behaviour “toxic”.

“This is not how you show love. This is deeply troubling,” Mel said. John added: “This is toxic, inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour that you must see now.  Frankly, I don’t feel very good about this. I want you to tell us why the three experts should not kick you out of the experiment right now.”

Since, in an interview with 9Entertainment, Carina has reflected on what happened. She said she didn’t think her comment about the rapper would make Paul as angry as it did.

“I didn’t think a comment like that would make him react so impulsively and abruptly,” she said. “He was very dramatic in the moment, and I was trying to suppress the situation and calm him down. I wasn’t scared, I didn’t feel unsafe or uneasy. I was just really hurt, I was confused and I was sad. It was a very emotional time and we both were in our feelings and we both were really sad. I was disheartened by how reactive he was.”

Carina added: “It doesn’t matter how much he can apologise and say sorry. I wanted the relationship to work. I forgave and I wanted to move forward with him and leave that in the past, and get that reassurance from him that he wasn’t going to do that in the future.”

Paul told 9Entertainment: “I completely lost control that day. It’s obviously, of course, unacceptable behavior. It’s not something you do, that’s not how you deal with emotions and it’s not how I deal with my emotions.”

He also said he has had professional help since the incident. “I had to talk to someone on the outside, a professional, to actually talk about it and find some sort of peace as I was so mad and angry at myself for reacting that way,” he said. “It was also sending the wrong message to Carina. I didn’t want her to feel unsafe. That’s the last thing that I would want.”
