Oxford Brookes students banned from Fishies due to ‘low attendance’ at Thursday lectures
‘This is not something the university wanted to do but it is unfortunately a step we have had to take’
Oxford Brookes students will no longer be able to attend Fishies due to “low attendance” at Thursday lectures.
A source from the university told The Brookes Tab that attendance figures have considerably dropped, which is being credited to the popular event on Wednesday nights.
Fishies is a staple amongst Brookes students, who attend the event at the city’s O2 Academy weekly.
It has been reported that students will be allowed to attend the event until the end of this academic year, but from September, only University of Oxford students will be let into the venue on Wednesdays.
First year student Joe, said he is “heartbroken” about the news, after finding his love for Fishies during Freshers’ Week.
He told The Brookes Tab: “Honestly, I’m gutted, heartbroken even. Fishies is a staple, and I don’t know what I’ll do with my Wednesdays anymore, study, I suppose.”
Tabitha, who’s in her final year of studying business at the university, said: “I’m so glad I’m leaving, it’s actually so peak for first and second years. They’ll just be spending their Wednesdays lost, looking for a rush that they’ll never be able to find again.”
Fishies has not yet spoken out publicly about the news, but the source did say that security at the O2 Academy will have a tablet which will contain the names and birth dates of all registered students. This will mean, when you show your ID, your student photo, name and date of birth will be able to be seen by the bouncers.
The Brookes Tab approached Oxford Brookes for a comment, a spokesperson said: “This is not something the university wanted to do but it is unfortunately a step we have had to take.

“Throughout the academic year, we have faced low attendance in all Thursday lectures, especially those starting at 9am.
“We have continuously contacted students who have not been present at the lectures, and still they have not listened.”
The spokesperson further explained that there are currently no plans to overturn the ban, but if students have any questions, they may contact their personal tutor.
You should probably check the date, you April fools!
