Thanos was introduced in Squid Game 2 as a rapper who had joined the players. He was a little bit evil it’s fair to say, but he was hilarious and met a fairly untimely death. Now, Netflix won’t stop sharing his best moments across TikTok, Instagram and Twitter.
It’s come out since that for those who didn’t already know, the actor who played Thanos is a rapper IRL, too. He’s also had a backlog of controversies, that the creator of Squid Game has defended. Now, the Squid Game creator has also shared why Thanos has his *great* name, and what is really means.
So, where did Squid Game character Thanos get his name from and what does it mean?
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed yes, Thanos did get his name from the Marvel Universe. Thanos’ purple hair even matched the Marvel character.
In an interview with Still Watching Netflix, the creator explained the real reason behind the name. “The reason I named the character Thanos… It doesn’t really suit a rapper as a name, was to design him to be a character fans worldwide could love,” he said. “But I am so grateful he is getting this much love.”

The creator said by naming Thanos after such a well-known character in the Marvel Universe, he hoped Thanos would get a huge reception as a character across the world. That he definitely did! His name, and characteristics, have definitely made him a stand-out personality in season two.
Speaking on Reddit, viewers of the show spoke further about the importance of Thanos having a memorable name. “It’s purposefully edgy and idiotic, to represent the rapper as try hard, overconfident,” one person said.
