Squid Game creator defends casting choice for Thanos following backlash towards his acting
The creator was ‘very impressed’ by his acting in the show
There’s no doubt that Thanos has to be one of the most controversial characters in Squid Game season two, with many viewers criticising Choi Seung-hyun’s acting as “absolutely awful” in the show.
In fact, some people are even calling for him to issue an official statement of apology for how he depicted Thanos in season two of Squid Game. But given that Thanos probably isn’t supposed to be super likeable, it looks like he’s probably just done a really good job of showcasing his character.
Still, following the immense backlash the director of Squid Game season two, Hwang Dong-hyuk has defended his decision to cast the rapper in the role of Thanos, stating he performed “very impressively.”
In an interview with PEOPLE, the director explained his decision to cast him, saying: “As you may know, the actor Seung-hyun, about nine years ago got involved in a marijuana scandal in Korea and wasn’t able to do any projects for the past nine years in Korea.
“And so this is a comeback after quite a long hiatus, and particularly because he portrays a character that’s a rapper and also someone who is on drugs.”
He continued: “I feel that it took him a lot of guts, in a way, to portray a character, especially someone who shares a lot of similarities that are quite negative to him as a person too. So I think it took him a lot of courage to take on that role.
“Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character.”
