Alice Oseman confirms a major character won’t be returning in Heartstopper season three
I can’t say I’m surprised
Sebastian Croft will not be returning as Ben Hope for Heartstopper season three, Alice Oseman has confirmed.
Sebastian, who plays Ben Hope, had a larger role in the Netflix series than in the graphic novels, with Alice Oseman explaining “his presence was necessary” to address the trauma he inflicted on Charlie.
Season two of Heartstopper saw Ben unsuccessfully try to make amends with Charlie. During a conversation outside of Lambert College of Art, Ben shows some remorse for what he inflicted on Charlie. However, Charlie said the trauma he inflicted was too large to just say “sorry” for.
Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman told Netflix’s TUDUM that after season two, Ben’s role will be “complete”, and he will move to a different school.
Sebastian added: “Alice and I both felt strongly about him not having a redemption arc.
“It’s a really beautiful way of having these two people who have been through a lot – and Ben’s been horrible to Charlie – to have that conversation and explore it on a deeper level than I felt like we got to do in season one.”
Alice Oseman said it would be “needlessly cruel” to involve a storyline in which Charlie forgives Ben.
“Ben can become a better person, but Charlie should not have to witness that, endorse it, or offer any forgiveness. And so he won’t,” the show’s creator concluded.
