If there’s one thing York is good for it’s brunching. There may be enough pubs for every day of the year but there has to be even more cafés and brunch spots. So if you’re feeling peckish at breakfast time, York has got you sorted.
Whether you want something sweet, salty, or anything in-between, there’s a place for you! Here’s a guide to the best places in York for all your brunching needs.
Doe Bakehouse, Church Street
If you’re in a rush and need something to grab and go, or if you’re wanting to add a sweet pop of colour to your morning, this little doughnut place on Church Street has got you covered. There’s an array of flavours sitting in the window waiting for you – from salted caramel, to Biscoff, Oreo, or strawberry. They also do great coffee and have a range of alternative milk options. Highly recommend for a sugar rush.
1331, Grape Lane
A hidden gem, 1331 is the place to go if you’re looking for your classic brunch foods. With options such as eggs Benedict, eggs Florentine or to a full fry-up on offer, it has all the brunch essentials.
In warmer weather, it’s lovely to sit in the outside area for a chilled mid-morning catch up with friends. Its super affordable and good quality food that will have you set up for the rest of the day.
Robinson’s, Bishopthorpe Road
This one’s a quirky one with lots of niche options! Located on the beautiful Bishopthorpe road, Robinson’s can offer you everything: sweetcorn fritters, granola, croque madame (a fancy cheese and ham sandwich), falafels, American pancakes and more. Even though it’s on the pricier side, the flavours are amazing so it’s definitely worth a visit!
Drift-In is a student cult classic. There are numerous ways in which you can satisfy your sweet-tooth in York, but if you’re looking for yummy pancakes and waffles, Drift-In is your place!
Their menu is filled with granola shakes, fruit smoothies, teas, topped-toasts and more. With tons of topping options and a range of milkshake flavours, Drift-In is a good spot for a fun brunch with your mates and is definitely affordable too.
Osbourne’s at 68, Gillygate
Just outside of the city walls is this hidden gem, Osbourne’s at 68 Gillygate. This is your place to go if you’re wanting a proper English breakfast and a good coffee. They do sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads. The staff are lovely and make you feel so welcome. And there’s even a menu for dogs, what a dream x
Spring Espresso, Lendal
For unique takes on brunch classics – you’ll love this one! A typical bacon sandwich never tasted so good; with tomato and sweet chilli chutney you’ll be wanting to go back as soon as you’ve left.
They have something for everyone. Full-English breakfasts for meat-eaters and veggies alike, porridge, French toast, avocado toast, pancakes and ciabattas, the list goes on! The owners are really friendly and the atmosphere is super chilled. Good vibes.
Parlormade Scone House, Little Shambles
Another lesser-known one for a typical brunch of tea and scones, Parlormade Scone House is the place to be. Hidden just behind the shambles market, this crooked little building is quaint and charming. You get to choose the flavour of your scone and the flavour of your jam, making it a fun and tasty experience. They have lots of flavoured-tea options, great coffee and yummy hot chocolates, all at a student-friendly price.
Recently opened on Fossgate, Rise is every brunch lover’s DREAM. With a beautiful and aesthetic interior with pastel colours and neon signs, it’s definitely one you’ll need to have your Insta ready for. With menu options ranging from vibrant smoothie bowls to Turkish eggs and toasties, you’ll definitely find something to fill all your brunch fantasies at Rise.
Flori, Nunnery Lane
And finally, this couldn’t be a brunch article without including the legendary Flori Bakery in there. Open Thursdays to Sundays and offering the BEST selection of pastries I’ve ever seen, an early morning stroll to grab pastries and coffee is the most main character I’ve ever felt and I highly recommend it. The pastries change from week to week so you’ll always find something new and delicious to try.
The staff are lovely and the whole place just gives off lovely vibes. Gets a 10 from me.
