Dunn Something Wrong?: Press officer confirms VC’s departure – then brands it “nonsense”

Total confusion in the press office as story of Thrift’s departure is first confirmed and then completely denied by Peter Dunn.

Update from University Press Office:

Following a meeting of University Council today, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nigel Thrift, has agreed to the Council’s wish to extend his current term of office into 2016. This is a further acknowledgment of his excellent leadership which the Council wishes to continue as we navigate the many opportunities and challenges that our University is facing.

If you were wondering what the Vice Chancellor actually does, don’t worry – so is the university.

An apparent omnishambles occurred today as the university’s press officer confirmed Vice Chancellor Nigel Thrift was leaving, only to brand the story “utter rubbish” hours later.

Nigel Thrift..Considering what the future holds? Or simply wondering what he’ll be buying next with his massive salary?

Peter Dunn was quoted in the Birmingham Post confirming that Professor Thrift was set to go, paying tribute to his boss and telling the paper: “We are really sad to see him go.”

But later he told The Boar the story was “complete and utter nonsense”, bizarrely branding the source of the story – i.e. himself “poorly informed person”.

The confusion deepened when beleaguered uni press officers told The Tab they did not know if Thrift would stay.

A spokesperson said there is a contract extension on the table for Nigel Thrift but she could not answer whether or not it had been accepted.

Peter Dunn is currently on a plane back from Australia so could not solve the mystery for us, and it is unclear which of his two personalities will emerge from the flight.

Meanwhile, the question remains – is Thrift in or is he out?
