Devastating fire rips through Radford accommodation

Around 60 firefighters have been tackling the blaze

Students have had to be re-homed after firefighters tackled a fire in accommodation in Radford.

Twenty-four students were evacuated from Student Lodge, on Player Street, Radford, at 2pm on Monday as smoke billowed from the building.

It is thought the fire was caused by students covering their smoke alarms and smoking in their rooms.

At roughly 7am on Tuesday, flames could be seen near the roof of the building and smoke could be smelt across the city.

Currently 41 people from both Trent and Uni of live in the building, but it is thought most of them were at home for Easter.

The cause of the fire is thought to be located within the third and fourth floors however firefighters are yet to be able to reach it.

Incident commander David Stevenson, from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said there were no reported injuries.

He said: “At the moment we have a significant fire in the roof space.

“The building conditions are too hazardous to commit firefighters into that part of the building.

“We are having to tackle the fire using an aerial ladder platform, at the same time we have got firefighters on the other side of the building where construction is taking place and they are actively fire fighting to prevent the fire spreading.”

In total 15 fire engines, five vehicles from East Midlands Ambulance Service and two police cars were at the incident.

The blaze has caused chaos throughout the city as multiple main roads into Radford have had to be closed.

Residents at the Glass House accommodation have received an email since the fire, suggesting that it could of been caused by people smoking and covering the fire alarms.

The accommodation was due to get 350 new residents in September- however it is not yet clear how future and current students will be catered for.
