Basement flood leaves Newton and Arkwright in the cold

There were two fire engines at the scene

The basement of Newton and Arkwright flooded this morning leaving the building without water, heating and flushing loos.

A pipe burst at round 7.45am causing a metre of water to gush into the plant room that heats the rest of the building.

It is thought around nine firefighters were in the basement pumping out water into drains in South Sherwood Street.

A spokesman for Trent explained the flood had been caused by a burst water main and was affecting facilities in the Newton and Arkwright buildings.

He said: “As a result the toilet facilities are unavailable and catering is severely limited.

“The buildings are still operational and classes are currently going ahead, however we will review this over the next hour or two.”
