We all need to admit that Endcliffe is the worst student accommodation

It’s not as great as it’s made out to be

| UPDATED

Endcliffe Student Village is hailed as the best place to live for first year undergraduates in Sheffield. People told me that moving there was a must for getting “the real university experience”. However, staying in Endcliffe has not lived up to its promises.

It's too far from everywhere

You'll find yourself having to wake up at 6:30 to get to your 8am classes every day. To leave Endcliffe, you hike up a hill in the morning and commute a total of at least 48 minutes every day in all types of weather. Yes, there is a bus, but it's £1 every time you're running late. That's a quid that can be spent on other things.

In between lectures, you can't just go home and relax but instead you spend pointless hours in the IC or the SU. It's very frustrating when most of your friends live in City accommodation and you lose a lot of time every week just from of travelling back and forth. You are also forced to take a taxi back from every night out, which really adds up in the long run.

Shopping is quite bad as well. There is a Village Store in Endcliffe but don't think you can buy your groceries here. "Spend and save" is their slogan but you are really just getting ripped off. The nearest supermarket is a Morrisons 10 minutes away which is not exactly cheap either. Living in Endcliffe means carrying your shopping bags long ways, not having a lot of variety and, of course, completely missing out on getting fresh ingredients from places like the Moor Market.

The facilities are outdated and nothing works

When I first arrived in Endcliffe, my toilet wouldn't flush properly for days. Recently, we had to call maintenance again because my tiny window wouldn't stay open by itself. Maintenance workers replacing toasters and microwaves are a common sight and one of our hobs never worked from the start and still doesn't.

The rooms are quite small and the walls might as well be made of paper because you can hear every single word. The Edge also has its own little bar which is cozy but way too overrated. It rarely fills up and it's quiz nights are mediocre. Let's not even mention the Wi-Fi which disconnects from my phone every time I lock it.

You can forget about ever getting a good nights sleep. This doesn't just apply for weekends by the way: Drunk people break bottles, chant and shout at each other right in front of your window every single night. Most of the time, security send forward the poor residents mentors to tell us to be quiet which as you can imagine never works anyway.

Why does Allen Court have TVs, key fobs and nicer furniture?

The differences between Endcliffe and city accommodation couldn't be bigger, even though the price is fairly similar. How is everything about my friends' flats more modern compared to where I live? In addition to the proximity to the university, they get a huge elevator, don't have to fiddle around with keyholes and a TV is included in every common room.

Finally, it can be concluded that Endcliffe is simply not worth your time and money. The buzzing social life and the fact that so many students are clustered together don't make up for all of Endcliffe's shortcomings.
