Big hits, tour and lap dances: Getting to know the women’s rugby team

Legends

The women’s rugby team are making waves in the university leagues. Not only are they bossing things on the pitch, but they have great chat off it. We caught up with some of the players to as the vital questions.

Rugby name: Sniff.

Position: Second Row.

Favourite Sheffield Night Out: Roar.

Why I Play Rugby: It’s the only sport I’m any good at.

Favourite ROAR Fancy Dress: Avatars.

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: England.

Fun Fact: I went to every Roar last year.

Rugby Name: Crumpet.

Position: Lock/Flanker.

Why I Play Rugby: I love rugby, it’s a sport that anyone can play. It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, it’s so inclusive that there’s a position for everyone.

Favourite Night Out: Roar after rugby, but otherwise Pop Tarts and Leadmill.

Favourite Roar Fancy Dress: Disney themed nights out are always a hit.

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: Wales, obvs.

Rugby name: Spud Me.

Position: Flanker.

Why I’m Going on Tour: I’m a rugby fresher so sounds like it’s going to be eventful and most of the rugby freshers are going on tour as well. Also, who can say no to a week in the sun filled with fancy dress.

Favourite night out: Roar.

Most Eventful Roar: Freshers’ Roar when it was a tight and bright social. It was nice to meet all of the rugby freshers and having a sign around my neck saying ‘Spud Me’ was entertaining as I was spudded a lot.

What I Like Doing Outside of Rugby: I love swimming, going out…a bit too much and brunch. I have a huge obsession when it comes to brunch.

Fun Fact: I am originally from Colombia.

Rugby name: Tactical Chunder (TC).

Position: Second Row.

Why I Play Rugby: I enjoyed watching it so I thought it would be fun to play, and it is.

Why I’m Going on Tour: Everyone says it’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Favourite Sheffield Night Out: Roar.

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: Ireland.

Fun Fact: I once slept in a park in Romania.

Rugby Name: Pacha.

Position: Hooker.

Why I Play Rugby: I wanted to join a sport and just randomly chose rugby at the sports fair.

Favourite Sheffield Night Out: Roar.

Favourite Roar Fancy Dress: 101 Dalmations.

Best Tour Memory: When I was in second year I was the Tour Sec and we shared a bus with the cricket team from Leeds University. We all wrote a song called ‘Oh Salou-ya’ with the same rhythm as ‘Hallelujah’. The lyrics were insane.

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: Ireland (but I support England).

Rugby Name: Superdry.

How I Got My Name: Before any freshers had got their names at social, I used to wear a Superdry hoody to training so the coach started to call me Superdry and it just stuck.

Position: Number 14.

Favourite Sheffield Night Out: Corp.

Why I Play Rugby: I wanted to try something new and go on socials.

Favourite Roar: Granny social (where everyone dressed up as grannies).

Fun Fact: I once Facebook called the man from Betty’s to ask him for free chicken.

Rugby Name: Daz.

Position: Centre.

Best Thing About Rugby: The social side of it.

Why I Play Rugby: I come from a rugby family.

Fave Sheffield Night Out: Roar (obviously).

Favourite Roar Fancy Dress: Uni Christmas day (we dressed up as convicts).

What I Like Doing Outside of Rugby: Drinking and seeing mates.

Most Eventful Roar: Too many to choose from but the majority involve Balti King.

Why I’m Going On Tour: Why wouldn’t you go on tour?

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: England.

Rugby Name: Scratch.

Position: Full Back.

Why I Play Rugby: I’ve played a lot of team sports but rugby by far has been the most fun. It’s physical, has high intensity fitness, skilful and different. People are genuinely interested or surprised when you say you play rugby so it’s a good ice breaker. I only started playing it when I joined uni and luckily have picked it up quickly. It is a sport at this uni that you can start from never touching a ball and still have a chance to play BUCS first team. I’m not sure that’s the same for many other popular clubs.

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: Tough, I’m not sure there is a clear winner at the moment. But I think it will be between Wales and England. Finger’s crossed it’s England.

Favourite Sheffield Night Out: Obviously Roar, it’s the only place you can dance as outrageously as we do without judgement…or maybe there is…

Favourite Roar Fancy Dress: I love it when we all go as the same thing at Christmas and my favourite fancy dress was the Nun costumes. Incredibly comfortable for a day of drinking and games.

Best Tour Memory: Giving my tour sec a lap dance in a very drunk state and receiving gayest straight award, a sash that is proudly hung in my bedroom two years later.

What It’s Like to Date Someone from the Men’s Rugby Team: Rugby is such a big part of my uni life so it’s really nice to date someone who understands and wants to watch me and wants to see me improve. We can have fun little revision breaks and throw a ball around and he can teach me fun little moves. After dating someone who really doesn’t care about rugby or uni sports it makes a great change and is just like having a best friend who has the same interests. He’s Welsh however so there’s a lot of rivalry when it comes to international rugby.

Rugby Name: Dobby.

Position: Forward/Prop or Flanker.

Why I Play Rugby: Something new, most girls don’t learn rugby at school.

Favourite Sheffield Night Out: Roar or Leadmill.

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: Ireland (but I’m Irish so I’m biased).

Best Tour Memory: I was in a wheelchair during the lats tour and some of the girls helped to wheel me into the sea and swim.

Favourite Roar: Last year’s Christmas Roar, so many people were there so it made it great.

Rugby Name: FOMO.

Position: Inside centre.

Why I Play Rugby: I tried it in first year and loved it.

Favourite Sheffield Night Out: Roar, then Poptarts.

Most Eventful Roar: The bin bag social. I went home with someone and the next day I had to walk home still in my bin bag.

Who I Think Will Win the Six Nations: I want England to but it will probably be Wales.

Fun Fact: I hold the record for best North East England under 16s shotput.

Why Sheffield: I wanted to go further south but still stay in the North.

Best Thing So Far about Sheffield: Being part of ladies rugby as I’ve made life long friends.
