Sheffield University and Students’ Union bag two awards for supporting international students

Sheffield University and Students’ Union have been honoured with two national awards that recognise and praise the contribution of international students to the university.

The #weareinternational campaign won the Internationalising the Student Experience category at the National Union of Students (NUS) and UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) Internationalisation Awards, announced at a ceremony in Warwick on Tuesday. The campaign aims to promote the fact that every student is international, regardless of country of origin.

Alex Kohnhert, StudentsUnion International Officer, was also awarded International Students’ Officer of the Year, after his dedication to promoting and improving the experience of international students across Sheffield.

Sheffield University has further introducing the  #standbyme selfie campaign in which images of students, staff and alumni are accompanied by stories of international friendship. The campaign is now spreading across other campuses in the UK.

Sheffield University boasts a population of around 25,000 students, with around 5,000 of those being classed as International.

However, the number of international applicants has fallen for the first time in 30 years- possibly due to the steep tuition fees universities now offer, with courses such as Dentistry, Medicine and Engineering demanding prices of £17,000 + a year from overseas students. Something to remember next time youre complaining about paying £9,000 a year for…”

VC Sir Keith Burnett said, It is a very great honour for our students to receive these awards, and they reflect the talent and commitment which they bring with them to the UK.

We are truly proud of our international community and we want to shout about it from the rooftops.
