The UEA bars now have a 24-hour license

Predrinks before lectures, anyone?

The UEA SU Bar will now be allowed to stay open 24 hours due to recent changes to its license.

The changes, approved by Norwich City Council, mean the bar can stay open 24 hours a day and can host events until 4am every day of the week.

Both red and blue bars will be allowed to serve alcohol until 3.30am.

Students are excited by the new extended opening times, with one saying: “This is great news. I am never ready to leave the LCR when it closes, so this means I will be able to stay out until I am ready to go home.”

However some nearby residents are not so pleased with the news. Two objections have already been made by people living on Bluebell Road, concerned it would lead to increased disturbances in the residential area.

Gavin Hudson, student activities manager, said: “We don’t intend to trade until 4am 365 days a year. Our events are mostly at the beginning of term, the end of term and around Christmas.”

Although the police did not object to the new license, they have been asked to be notified of high risk events taking place until 4am.
