This Thursday the UEA Marrow Society will be holding its first donor recruitment event at the LCR, between 10am and 4pm.

The society works alongside the charity, The Anthony Nolan Trust, which were named Charity of the Year at the Charity Times Awards 2012. The charity created the world’s first register of people willing to donate their stem cells, and their research institute is one of the leading in the world.

These stem cells are vital in the treatment of patients with Leukemia and other related blood disorders, and all you need to do to potentially become a stem cell donor is give a saliva sample at the donor recruitment event.

On Thursday, volunteers and UEA Marrow Society members will be happy to tell you more about the charity and explain why it is so important that we give our saliva samples at the ”Save a Life” session.

It could be one patient’s only chance for survival

Laura Josephs, committee president said: “Even when you give a saliva sample, there is still only a one in 1000 chance that you will be called up [to donate stem cells].

“This is why it’s so important – it could be one patient’s only chance for survival”.

As well as the donor recruitment event, the society will be hosting a fundraising social on Friday 2 November, with a superhero theme to the night.

The pub crawl will start at the Union Pub at around 8pm, heading into Norwich later in the evening to local hot spots such as Vodka Revolution and Mercy.

Drinks deals and discounts have already been arranged by the society with the bars, so for a great night out which will help a brilliant cause – then get involved!
