Video footage from the UCL occupation of late 2010 may make uncomfortable viewing for UCLU Democracy and Communications Officer Sam Gaus after it showed him calling Theresa May a “whore”.

In a song entitled “Universities’ Lament” Gaus calls a number of members of the cabinet, including the Prime Minister, “c**ts”, but it is his use of language in describing the Home Secretary that might prove more shocking.

The statement may bring Gaus into conflict with UCLU Women’s Network, who have a strong record of campaigning against sexism. In November their twitter account stated: “we applaud efforts to heighten women’s positions in academia & other fields but that doesn’t mean everyday sexism is ok”.

The supposedly tongue in cheek nature of the song is unlikely to get Gaus back in their good books either. Another tweet from the @UCLwomensnet account states: “yes we love it when men disguise their misogyny as a joke.

In reply, Gaus stated that he only used the word “whore” in relation to Theresa May “due to meter and rhyme” and that he would not “write that kind of language…nowadays”.

“My personal politics have changed a lot for the better in two years”, he said, and stressed that he is “proud of how my outlook and communication has changed since this video.”
