Bye Bye BNP: Griffin stripped of North West Euro Parliament seat

The results from Thursday evening’s election are in, and the BNP are out

Nick Griffin, the BNP representative for the North West seat in the European Parliament for the past five years, will no longer be the face of our region after a crushing defeat.

Claiming a mere 1.87% of the vote, the result can only be taken as massive loss of support – last time round, they claimed 7%.

Violent scenes were witnessed outside in Manchester when Griffin arrived for the results, with protesters desperate to see him and his party voted out.

Sad times for the BNP

It has been claimed the reason so many have left Griffin’s sinking ship is that UKIP is now the modern day xenophobes party of choice.

Griffin himself said, regarding UKIP “[our supporters] have voted for UKIP’s racist policies instead.”

He’s clinging on for as long as he can though…

Labour managed to win the region with 33.86%, to follow up on their success in the council elections. They beat UKIP into 2nd place on 27.47%, whereas the Greens managed to overtake the Lie Dems to come 4th.

The seats allocated have been three to Labour, three to UKIP, including their deputy leader Paul Nuttall, and two to the Conservatives.

The North West results in full

Hannah Clare, who stood for election as Guild President this year, also stood as a Green councillor in Liverpool. Doing credibly and securing 19% of the vote, it was still unfortunately not enough to remove the incumbent Labour representative.

The Greens are now officially the opposition in Liverpool having claimed some of the (many) seats vacated by ousted Liberal Democrats.

However, they do only have 4 seats to Labour’s 79 –  more of a murmuring than an opposition.
