LUDS announce details of Spring season

From Greek tragedies to contemporary masterpieces, LUDS have got plenty of theatrical treats lined up this Spring.

Liverpool’s resident student dramatists have never disappointed when it comes to a tantalising and varied selection of plays, and this Spring season things are no different. Here’s the rundown on exactly what’s coming up.

The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh – 5th-7th March – Stanley Theatre

Christian Darnell takes directing duties on this black comedy, premiered in 2003. Concerning   the arrest of an author of short stories whose tales of violence against children are beginning to mirror recent child murders, this is one of LUDS’ most interesting productions yet.

The Bacchae by Euripedes (Scripted by Jacob Bolton) – 12th-14th March – Stanley Theatre

At the other end of the time spectrum Nina Franklin is helming an adaptation of Euripides’ Ancient Greek tragedy. Expect generous helpings of cross-dressing in a re-working of ancient tale of warring gods that’s still as compelling as it ever was.

4000 Miles by Amy Herzog – 19th-21st March – Stanley Theatre

The newest of the established plays this season, Amy Herzog’s acclaimed 2011 play concerns the clash of personalities when a 21 year-old man starts living with his 91 year-old grandmother. A masterclass in subtle characterisation, this is a fine chance for LUDS to show off their acting chops.

The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer – 26th-28th March – Stanley Theatre

A must-see for any English students, Chaucer is known (by Wikipedia at least) as the father of English literature, and The Canterbury Tales are as good as it gets. It’s bound to beat trawling through the original Middle-English at least.

Or would you rather slog your way through this?

Scribble Presents: Sketching Out – 29th March and 26th April – House on Bold Street

Scribble return for yet another demonstration of why they’re the university’s best sketch comedy troupe – other than the fact they’re the only one. Expect a lightning fast barrage of hilarity from Python-esque surrealism to intelligent satire.

Experimental Theatre Night – 4th April – Gilmour Lounge

“We started the night because a drama society should be a safe place to create something, even if that something is a bit abstract!” says LUDS co-president Iona Campbell of the production, which features six short plays by LUDS members themselves.

Short Plays Night – 29th April – Venue TBC

Another production written by the society themselves, submissions are still coming in for the short plays night, but if LUDS can write as well as they can act then its sure to impress.

Endgame – 1st May – Eleanor Rathbone Theatre

Finishing the year LUDS are taking on Samuel Beckett’s seminal Endgame, his best known work alongside Waiting For Godot. One of the first to take a minimalist approach to theatre, this tragicomic production remains one of the most important plays of the last century.

All productions kick off at 7:30pm
