Who went to UoL? Prepare to be underwhelmed

Liverpool’s a top uni, but are its graduates anything to shout about? Vote for your favourite!

| UPDATED

Being a redbrick uni flying high in the league tables (we’re not cocky), you might expect our alumni to be a veritable who’s who of impressive, important people. Sadly, after a little research, it seems that’s not exactly the case…

Carol-Ann Duffy

This one may be up for debate. Sure, she’s our poet laureate – fairly impressive. Then again, if you’ve actually read any of her work you’ll probably know her best for irritatingly righteous poems involving metaphors about menstrual cycles. Whatever happened to subtly?

Chris Lowe

AKA one half of the Pet Shop Boys duo. Strangely, Lowe studied architecture during his time at UoL; The Tab can’t help but wish he’d stuck to his chosen degree as a career path.

Nick Grimshaw

‘Grimmy’ is the latest host of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, succeeding Chris Moyles last year. Grimmy, who left uni with an uninspiring 2:2, was in the news recently for ordering a stripper for Harry Styles’ (of One Direction fame) 19th shindig. There’s so much wrong with that sentence The Tab wouldn’t know where to begin.

Wade Barrett

Wade, or ‘Stu’, is an English professional wrestler and former bare-knuckle boxer. Stu studied marine biology at Liverpool uni before training to become a wrestler. Scientists of UoL, this could be you one day!…Though probably not.

Jon Snow

Currently a presenter for ITN, Snow is probably best known for his work presenting the Channel 4 News. Old Snowy not only went to UoL, but got kicked out. His involvement in a student anti-apartheid protest meant he got the boot before completing his degree in law. Rebel, rebel. Having said that, we thought he deserved to be included for his impeccable ability to pick out a tie and his rendition of I Kissed a Girl is really something else….

It’s not all bad news though…

Dame Stella Rimington

This one restores some faith. As the first female general director of MI5, Dame Rimington is a fantastic example of perseverance, not to mention women succeeding in a male orientated environment. She studied archive administration during her time at university (who knew that was a degree?) and went on to be a huge success in MI5.
