When I walked into Camp & Furnace, my first reaction was definitely better than I’d anticipated. I’d been dragged to this random music event by housemates (and called in sick to work for it – I didn’t really take too much persuading to be honest) and, if it was rubbish, I barely had enough money to get drunk (probably also something to do with me missing work all the time).

Who says blokes can’t multitask?

Turned out, the warehouse-like venue brought together a perfect combination of the homely and the minimalist, with fairy lights, a campervan and a whole load of beach balls thrown in. Second nice surprise, alcohol and food were cheap AND you could pay on card; win/risky business, depending on which way you look at it. So from the offset the atmosphere was buzzing, even without considering the music.

However, the music itself did indeed compliment its coolly mismatched venue perfectly, with a mix ranging from acoustic to drum and bass. One of the highlights, acoustic angel Laura James, used poetic lyrics and delicate vocals backed with a good old acoustic guitar to create a perfectly chilled vibe in the room.

In stark contrast, quirky band “Rumjig”, is another one to search for on Facebook. Their blend of funk, jazz, folk and dubstep tunes should have been a mess; in all honesty it sounded a bit pretentious when first described to me. Instead, the group managed to get all the shy, too-cool-to-show-enthusiasm types on the dance floor.  The other bands there did not fall short in comparison, though did perhaps blur into one long set rather than standing out like the other two.

The crowd quite clearly loving it

The DJ sets were also no disappointment. Those lightweights considering leaving at the end of the bands stopped short when it started, and musicians from previous acts came on stage to join in with a mash up of rap, ska and dubstep- the only flaw in this section of the night was that it didn’t last long enough, finishing after half an hour at 3am.

All in all, Fiestabombarda delivered. The event was run by Bombarda Collective, a group of promoters, designers and musicians who throw several events throughout the year- its definitely worth giving them a like on Facebook to see what else they have install for us this year.
