Is Middleton a Mannequin?

Is Princess Kate just a plastic faced baby-machine? Exeter Uni honorary graduate Hilary Mantel thinks so.

Devonshire author Hilary Mantel sparked huge controversy this week after she labelled Kate Middleton a “shop-window mannequin” during her lecture on royal women, entitled “Undressing Anne Boleyn”.

The 60-year-old author, who won the Man Booker Prize in 2009 and 2012 and is an honorary graduate of Exeter University, made harsh claims against the Duchess of Cambridge, stating that “her only point and purpose (is) to give birth.”

Amongst others, Prime Minister David Cameron leapt to the defense of Kate, saying Mantel was “completely wrong”.

Conor Byrne, a history student at the university, comments “I wouldn’t say Kate is ‘plastic’ or a breeding machine, I think she is a very genuine, warm, professional woman who is doing the best she can as princess and duchess. However, since the role of royal wives is to bear sons maybe Mantel has a point…”
