Not living with your best friends might actually be a good thing

Who doesn’t like making new friends?

When you arrive in first year everything is so exciting and new. But also, you are fucking terrified. For many, one of the biggest fears is whether you will make any friends and if you will have anyone to live with in 2nd year.

However, I personally think that there is a massive misconception about how you have to live with your best mates in order to have a good time and have a social life.

I lived with some of my really good friends in second year and that was great and we all had a good time. However, third year rolls around and suddenly all of your friends are going on years abroad and you aren’t and all you can think is ‘fuck, I am going to have no friends next year’.

This is so wrong.

You’ll make some new besties – just like these guys

If you decide to move in with a group of people that you aren’t as well acquainted with then there are a myriad of positives that comes along with it:

  1. New people = new friends
  2. New opportunities
  3. Chance to escape old stereotypes that may have haunted you since first year
  4. It can give you perspective on your other friendships

Branching out and forcing yourself into meeting new people is a terrifying prospect. However, in terms of actually living together, it makes life so easy. Because you may be a little more nervous when moving in as you are essentially starting new friendships it means that both you and your flatmates will be considerate and conscientious towards one another.

This means that the flat is tidier, people are nicer and you actually try and be a good flatmate. If you find yourself not getting along as well then you can go and hang out with your other friends.

Before you know it you will all be in bed with a cuppa together like you have been bffs since birth

Moving in with friends of a friend or a flat that need one more person because someone has dropped out makes it really easy. Firstly, because you can get the down-low on them and they can suss you out as well. Secondly, because the flat hunting is virtually done for you (and flat hunting is such a nightmare).

Just make sure that you aren’t moving in with a serial killer and you will be fine.

It’s a win-win really.
