“I proposed to my best friend here at university two weeks ago. For my proposal I organised 60 people to stand in a rectangle of 3×20.

“Each received a card black on one side and white on the other. With every member being essentially a pixel they spelled out “will – you – marry – me… – :]” while we were looking at them from the second floor.

“I gave my friends the following explanation on the day:

“‘A series of numbers will be called, you are meant to swap the card over to show the other side if you are associated with the called number. You will be given your number prior to positioning.  After each count we will swap back to black before for a few seconds commencing with the next count.  It is crucial that you remember which of the 5 numbers you are meant to swap on and most people will swap more than once. Your swap is defined by the following tables.  So for example A1 will swap on counts 3 and 4, C15 on 2 and 5 etc. Your position will be given to you on the day as you arrive on the lawn.’

With 5 minutes of practice execution was almost perfect as you can see from the video!”

Emil has since received a number of unexpected phone calls and comments after many of his friends from abroad thought he was actually married!

“I proposed to my College Husband in one of the Calman Learning Centre lecture halls – mid-maths lecture.

“I walked in (in full black tie) and was promptly told to get out. I then had to plead with the lecturer (see pictures) to let me speak to my husband until eventually the lecturer caved in.

“Once this was achieved I then ran up the top of the hall, got down on one knee and read a poem I had prepared beforehand (see video). After this was done I took out a ring I had bought previously and popped the question – he said yes. ”

Nick proposed to Eloise in Hatfield College chapel. She had no idea the proposal was taking place and was told that he was actually proposing to somebody else.

But when Eloise got to the door she was escorted in by the best men Harry Jones and Jack Gault. Toby Bradshaw was the priest (not really sure why he was present for the proposal) and Angus Murphy was on the piano.

Our first entry, and as featured in our competition launch last month, Castle fresher Mark proposed to his college wife Aimee after formal, and it was no ordinary proposal:

Mark had his friends lighting candles while he was with Aimee in formal.

George Haslem

George proposed to Ayesha Hussein in Grey College last week.

“Having slipped this note under her door with a set of directions to follow, Ayesha was led to a hill overlooking the Cathedral, Castle and all of Durham. There George was waiting in a suit, where he proceeded to take out his guitar and play her a little song he’d written himself.

“He then got down on one knee and gave her a lovely ring… Unsurprisingly they’re now married!”
