BREAKING: Emma PhD Student Killed in Iran
Negar Miralaei, a 4th year PhD student in Computer Science, was reportedly killed in an accident
Students from Emmanuel received an email this afternoon informing them of Miralaei’s death.
The email from the Senior Tutor said he was “very sorry to report the sad news of the death” of the student, and offered support to any students affected.
Before coming to Cambridge, Miralaei did her Bsc at Tarbiat Dabir Shahid Rajaee University, Iran and her Masters at Shahid Beheshti University, Iran.
While at Cambridge, she was also on the committee of [email protected] – a network promoting “a positive action programme for women in computing research, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary research, leadership and enterprise.”
This death is the second of a Cambridge PhD student in the past 2 years, following the murder of Giulio Regeni in Egypt last year.
A university spokesperson said: ‘It is with great sadness that we hear of the unexpected death of Negar Miralaei. Negar was a fourth year PhD student in computer science at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. She was a dedicated and determined researcher, who brought passion and drive to her work in a challenging area of research.
“She was a cherished colleague, whose warmth, generosity and kindness won her many friends both in Cambridge and beyond, and she will be greatly missed.
“Our thoughts are with her friends and family at this sad time.”
