Goodbye, The Fly

RIP The Fly – hopefully not gone forever…

One of Belfast’s biggest student spots, The Fly, will be shutting it’s doors for good on February 12th, taking with it one of Belfast’s biggest student nights – Scratch Mondays.

As news broke the student population of the Holylands went into mourning and had many of us wondering what could have happened to shut the doors of this beloved club, and more importantly what would we do with our Monday nights now?

Twitter is awash with revellers lamenting the loss of The Fly

It is in fact a failed agreement in the renewal of the lease between The Fly owners, The Horatio Group, and the buildings landlord, Southern based bank Nama, which has lead The Hortaio Group to vacate the premises, seeing the new lease as too expensive.

So, does this mean we students will lose out on cheap cocktails and beer pong for good? Hopefully not as it has been reported a new owner will be taking over, no date for this has been set however. Not to fear though as the much loved Scratch Mondays are to continue in The Botanic Inn, another beloved establishment of the Holylands, from the 17th of February.

Where will we get our £3 cocktails now?! I’ll miss you, The Pixie Lott

And if you’re getting emotional about the end of the reign of The Fly (previously The Taphouse, remember that?), their last hurrah is a closing party on February 11th.
