Last week, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from prison after serving eight years behind bars for the murder of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard in 2016.

In court, it was found that Gypsy’s mother had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a psychological disorder where a carer makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make the person they are caring for appear ill.

But in 2015, she met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating site and the two conspired to kill her mother. On 9th June 2015 Nicholas Godejohn entered the house and stabbed Dee Dee to death whilst Gypsy hid in the bathroom.

But who is Nicholas Godejohn, Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s ex-boyfriend who killed her mother?

Nicholas Godejohn is a 34-year-old man from Wisconsin, US. He was 26 years old when he met Gypsy Rose Blanchard on a Christian dating site and began speaking to her. Their relationship was predominantly online and secretive until they met up in March 2015. Then in June, conversations turned darker after Nicholas Godejohn revealed an “evil side” that “enjoys killing”.

Nicholas Godejohn’s trial was held in November 2018, during which Gypsy testified that she came up with the plan to kill her mother because it was the only way she could escape her life of abuse.

While no one disputed whether Godejohn killed Dee Dee, his attorneys had argued that he was manipulated by Gypsy to kill her mum and should have his charges reduced to second-degree murder, PEOPLE reported.

But Nicholas was found guilty of first-degree murder as well as armed criminal action and sentenced to life in prison. Therefore, whereas Gypsy Rose has just been released early, due to her second-degree murder charge, Nicholas Godejohn is still in prison. He is currently based at Potosi Correctional Centre in Missouri, US.

In July 2019, Nicholas Godejohn did an interview from prison where he called his relationship with Gypsy “the best days of my life”.

He said: “From the very beginning, I just knew we were soulmates. Those five days when I was actually with her, physically with her, those five days were the most intense, and magical, and awe-inspiring days I’ve ever had.”

“Somehow I just knew, deep within my heart, some way me and her would end up being together in the end. There’s no other option, we gotta do it,” he said, referring to the murder. “I wanted to make sure her mom was not going to harm her anymore. I made sure of that.”

When did the two break up?

After the murder trial, Gypsy and Nicholas Godejohn’s relationship quickly deteriorated and one of her family friends revealed she was engaged to another man in April 2019.

In June 2022, Gypsy Rose Blanchard married her husband Ryan Anderson who she is now with after leaving prison.
