Depp v Heard on Netflix: What have Johnny and Amber been up to since the court case?

It’s been over a year since the Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard defamation trial that took over the world. Now, there is a new documentary on Netflix about the case that shows both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, examining the trial that led to an online fallout and what later became known as a “trial by TikTok”.

In April 2022, a legal battle ensued between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, who had one of the most publicised and messy divorces in Hollywood history. Heard had previously accused Depp of domestic abuse, which he denied and led to a lawsuit in which he sought $50 million in damages for allegations she made in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post.

Johnny Depp was awarded $15 million in damages and Amber Heard $2 million. Since the case, it seems the pair have moved on with their lives, with both of them moving halfway across the world. Here’s what Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are doing now a year after their infamous defamation case.

Where is Johnny Depp now?

Johnny Depp is currently living in the UK, in a Somerset property that has its own on-site dairy farm. Depp has spent most of his time in the UK following the court case, saying he preferred it and described English people as “cool”.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor bought the 19th century style mansion in 2014 for £13 million.

“British people are cool and will greet you as if you are a neighbour – without going over the top,” he said about living in the UK.

Depp was previously spotted at an antiques centre in Lincolnshire where he arrived by helicopter and was taken on a private tour. Whilst there, he bought three guitars, a skull-encrusted vase and an easel.

In his first movie role since the defamation case, Depp starred as King Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry, a film about the final mistress of the royal. Johnny Depp is also working on his first directing job in 25 years, Modi. The film is a biopic about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, with Al Pacino set to star and co-produce.

What is Amber Heard doing now?

Heard left the US following the defamation case and is currently living in Spain with her daughter, Oonagh. A reporter asked Heard how she was taking to life in Madrid, to which she replied: “I love Spain so much.” When asked if she plans to stay in Spain, she said: “Yes, I hope so. I love living here.”

Amber Heard also made a return to acting, and made a red carpet appearance at the 69th Taormina Film Festical for the premiere of In the Fire. In the film, she stars as Grace, a doctor from New York who travels to a remote plantation in South America to care for a  tortured boy who appears to have inexplicable abilities.

One thing that was heavily speculated during the trial, was if Amber Heard would be starring in Aquaman 2, which she has confirmed she will be.

Heard told Deadline: “Aquaman, that franchise and the machinery behind it, I’m very honoured to be a part of that. And then there are these small passion projects like In The Fire, where I’m proud to have gotten to know the filmmaker and the cast, and we got dirty together, to breathe life into this story.

“There’s something cool about that, and I think success is an actor who is able to have both those things.”
