New Gen Z online publication founded by Lancaster University student
The final-year economics student is also the team’s Editor-in-Chief
A Lancaster University student has founded a digital publication, written exclusively by 18-to-25-year-olds.
Founder and Editor-in-chief William Greer-Waring, a final-year economics student, launched the site following his time at The Times and Sunday Times’ Summer Academy this year.
He identified an “opportunity to bridge the gap between traditional media and Gen Z” by creating a site that gives young people a platform to freely express their ideas.
The Twenty aims to share news articles, feature pieces and experience stories with their audience, with writers consisting of students and graduates of UK universities.
As Editor-in-Chief, William is able to lead the editorial direction of The Twenty and create a space of “thoughtful, entertaining and independent journalism” for the next generation of journalists and writers.
The editorial team also includes Freya Wedgewood (Founding Executive Editor), a final-year economics and English Literature student at the University of St. Andrews, and Tom Billson (Founding Director of Communications & Editorial), a recent graduate of History at University of the West of England. The trio met one another during their time at The Times and Sunday Times’ Summer Academy, where the “foundations of the publication were laid”.
The organisation adds: “By giving Gen Z a platform to explain stories and ideas from their perspective, we’re allowing other generations to understand and connect with how they see the world.
“We aim to do this by giving the brightest and most talented minds of the next generation the opportunity to develop their voices, whilst contesting existing notions.
“What sets The Twenty apart is that all of this will be consistent with our rigorous editorial standards, ensuring our output will be interesting and readable for all audiences.”
Recent works have included articles on UK politics, a recent talk from Evan Gershkovich on his lived experiences, and an immserive piece on watching Manchester City FC compete in this year’s UEFA Champions League.
