A deep dive into how rich Eddie Horniman really is in season two of Netflix’s The Gentlemen

Er, he has half a million pounds of watches

One minute, Eddie Horniman will be bragging about how obscenely rich he is. The next, he’ll be whining that he doesn’t have enough money. So, how rich actually is Eddie Horniman in Netflix’s The Gentlemen? Here’s an extensive deep dive.

The estate in The Gentlemen is real (sort of)

So, the Netflix series The Gentlemen is filmed at Badminton House (which is on Badminton Estate). That’s the actual home of the Dukes of Beaufort. When the last Duke of Beaufort died in 2017, his fortune was estimate at £315 million.

So, £315 million seems like a reasonable guesstimate for how much Eddie’s Halstead Estate in The Gentlemen would be worth.

The aristocracy in the UK whose families still have huge estates generally don’t have to pay inheritance tax on them – they are often held in trusts. This evolved from the days when estates would be entailed to descendants, instead of bequeathed to specific heirs (like in the plot of Downton Abbey). This would explain why Eddie wasn’t faced with a £126 million inheritance tax bill in the first episode.

Eddie also has a fortune in swag

Oh look, another watch

It’s very likely that the valuable antiques and artworks we see in Halstead Manor would count as part of the estate. More recently-purchased luxuries – such as the seemingly-limitless fleet of Land Rovers – may be Eddie’s alone.

According to this extremely through GQ article on Eddie’s watches, he has quite the collection in season two: a white-dial Rolex Daytona, a 1970s Movado, a Vertex MP45 Heritage, a Chopards 41mm Alpine Eagle, a Chopards L.U.C. Heritage Grand Cru, a Tag Heuer Carrera, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar; an Omega Seamaster 300, an Omega Speed Master, two Panerai Luminors, a Panerai Radiomir, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Chronograph Moon, a  Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph.

I have no idea what any of those look like, either. But after some research, I can tell you his watch collection would cost in the realm of £460,000 (depending on whether he got them second hand, or on sale, of course).

Er, so how much money is Eddie making from his farming exploits?

Before we get in: A lot of the math surrounding the Glass family’s farms ain’t mathing. So, if any business school grads think these figures sound unrealistic, blame the screenwriters, not me x

In the very first episode, Susie seems to confirm Eddie’s theory that the farm on his estate makes £50 million profit each year, and Eddie’s dad (and now him) get 10 per cent of that.

These figures seem very out of line with Eddie and Susie’s offer to buy the whole business (including 14 farms, by that point) off Susie’s dad for £235 million. Er, perhaps Bobby was undervaluing the company because he was never really planning to sell it?

Eddie seems to have got a significant pay rise off-screen. In the season one finale, he’s willing to invest the £30 million he got from Susie back into her dad’s business. By episode five, he has another £30 million held back to buy two more estates that used to be part of his.

In conclusion

Overall, it seems Eddie’s total net worth by the end of The Gentlemen season two is upwards of £376 million. Crikey, no wonder that wedding in Italy looked nice.
