Netflix’s Crew Girl is basically Heated Rivalry with rowing, and I need it immediately

If you’ve already binged Heated Rivalry and are desperately searching for your next fix of sport, drama, yearning and extremely attractive people, Netflix might have just sorted you out.

The streaming giant is bringing Crew Girl to our screens on 10th September, and from the sound of it, it’s about to be your next sports drama obsession.

Sports teams have officially become streaming’s latest fixation, with Heated Rivalry and Prime Video’s Off Campus both tapping into the very specific combination of competitive sport and messy romance. Now, Crew Girl is getting involved, except this time, we’re swapping hockey and college campuses for high school rowing.

And yes, there is a love triangle. Obviously.

The series follows Teagan, a competitive rower whose life is thrown completely off course after a humiliating family scandal. Forced to start again at an elite prep school, she quickly discovers there’s one major problem: There isn’t a girls’ rowing team.

Rather than giving up on the sport she loves, Teagan becomes the coxswain for the school’s chaotic all-boys crew team. Naturally, this does not go smoothly.

While trying to prove herself and win over the team, Teagan ends up clashing with its arrogant captain. But things get even messier when she develops an unexpected connection with the team’s overlooked potential MVP.

So basically: Rivalry, tension, yearning, boys in rowing gear and a love triangle. We’re seated.

Speaking at Netflix’s End of Summer Bash Event, Martineau gave fans a pretty clear idea of what they can expect from the series, teasing: “You can expect a lot of drama, a lot of abs, a lot of rowing.”

Honestly, that is already enough to convince us.

She also described the show as a coming-of-age story that gets into the chaos of growing up, saying: “Adolescence is messy, but it’s beautiful, and we navigate friendships and romances and a lot of family dynamics. I think a lot of people, young viewers, people in their 30s, 40s, will enjoy it. It’s such a good coming-of-age story.”

Unlike Heated Rivalry, Off Campus, Finding Her Edge and the upcoming Icebreaker, Crew Girl isn’t based on a book, but it definitely seems to be borrowing the ingredients that have made those sports romances so addictive.
