Cruise drama explained as ‘petty icon’ pulls off elaborate sting operation to confront friend

Twitter is currently enthralled by some cruise ship drama, and it involves a woman called Vanessa Phillips, a man called Armonte Wilson, and an elaborate sting operation. The FBI should hire her. 

Let’s start at the beginning: In posts that have since gone viral on Twitter and Instagram, Vanessa Phillips claimed that she had made plans to go on a cruise with an “associate” she’d met on a previous cruise in 2025. 

She alleged: “This person was looking for a partner to sail with from August 30 to September 6. I reached out to them, and we made plans, plans that included a FAKE itinerary, FAKE AGENT BOOKING NUMBERS, INVOICES and payments sent totaling near $110.

“As I made my way to Galveston to board the MSC cruise ship Seascape @armontewilson stopped responding to my text messages and blocked my number. I called the one 800 number to confirm what had happened, and they informed me that he only spent $524 for his cruise. So why did he tell me that it costed $1100 you ask?? I asked the same thing.”

But Vanessa did not stop there.

In a move that’s seen her dubbed a “petty icon” on Twitter, Vanessa booked herself another spot on the cruise she was supposed to be on. 

“What he didn’t count on was me booking a totally separate booking aboard the same ship taking off that day after I found out that he scammed me… and like I told the representative on the phone I will see him on this ship and he is going to gag when I do cause he’s going to face me and give me my motherf**king money back,” she wrote. 

With help from another “rainbow agent” – which, side note, is the coolest term ever – Vanessa planned to catch her former friend out. They arranged to meet on an undisclosed hookup app, and she recorded the moment that she confronted him.

Vanessa Phillips also attached the video to her Facebook post, and it showed her approaching Armonte in the jacuzzi. She just stood there recording him until one of Armonte’s friends pointed her out. 

“Oh you thought I wasn’t going to get on here,” she said, pointing at him. “When you took my 11 hundred dollars? You thought I wasn’t going to make it? So where’s my money?”

An argument soon ensued, with Armonte hitting back with: “Are you going to put hands on me? I didn’t take your money.”

It ended with Armonte going to get security. 

Armonte Wilson hit back with statements of his own 

In Facebook posts, Armonte urged people to wait for his official statement on the matter, where he promised to dispell misinformation. 

He wrote: “I’m aware of the posts and discussion surrounding the trip, and I understand why people have questions. There’s a lot being said right now, but not everything being shared is accurate or complete. I don’t want to add to the speculation or respond emotionally. I’m taking the time to make sure the facts are clear before saying more.

“I’ll address the situation directly with the relevant facts and correct any misinformation that needs to be corrected. In the meantime, I’d ask people not to spread claims or private information that they haven’t verified. Thank you to everyone who has given me the chance to address this responsibly.”

He later announced a break from social media, thanking people for their support. 

He explained: “At this point, continuing to argue back and forth online is not helping anyone. I’m taking a step back from the noise and choosing to handle things responsibly and privately.

“I understand that people may have questions, and I also understand that everyone is going to have their own opinion based on what they’ve seen. I’m not going to continue responding to every accusation, comment, or video. Some things deserve context, but not everything needs to be fought out on social media.”

“I’m taking accountability for my part, learning from what has happened, and making changes where they are necessary. I also ask that people allow the situation to be handled appropriately rather than continuing to spread assumptions, edited clips, or information that may not tell the entire story.”

He again promised to address what “needs” to be addressed, but has yet to issue a further statement.
