Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe returning?! Fake Harry Potter announcements have gone viral

You might have seen a load of very exciting Harry Potter casting announcements flying around social media this week, but there’s a good chance at least some of them are completely made up.

Fake casting news for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has been everywhere, particularly on X, where posts claiming huge original cast members are returning have been racking up attention.

One viral post claims that Daniel Radcliffe has “reportedly confirm’s the HBO ‘HARRY POTTER’ series will be his final time appearing in the universe, bringing a legendary 26-year run to an emotional end”.

Sounds pretty major, right? Unfortunately, it isn’t true.

Another post doing the rounds claims: “Tom Felton is reportedly signed on to play Lucius Malfoy, father of Draco Malfoy in the “HARRY POTTER” HBO Series. He is a wealthy pure-blood wizard & a devoted follower of Lord Voldemort”

Again, there’s no truth to the announcement, and it’s not just Daniel and Tom who have supposedly been making their way back to the Wizarding World.

Another viral claim says Mark Mylod, the director of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, has reportedly offered Emma Watson a huge deal to return as Hermione’s mother, Mrs. Granger.

Yes, that would certainly be one way to get the original cast back involved, but there has been no official announcement confirming Emma Watson has joined the show.

The confusion is understandable, though, because HBO really has been revealing a whole load of new Harry Potter casting news lately.

This weekend, the network announced several new additions to the cast for season two, including Lenny Rush as Dobby, Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley and Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle.

Bonnie Hill will take over the role of Ginny from Gracie Cochrane, who played the character in season one but exited the role “due to unforeseen circumstances”.

With genuine casting announcements arriving so frequently, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to work out which Harry Potter posts are actually official and which ones have simply been invented for the internet.

For now, the safest place to check is the official Harry Potter Instagram account, where the show’s actual casting announcements are made.

The first season of the Harry Potter TV show has now wrapped and is set to premiere on HBO on 25th December. Meanwhile, season two is currently in pre-production at Leavesden Studios outside London.
