The best Liverpool societies to join in September as a student with no hobbies

So, you’ve either made it to one of Liverpool’s amazing unis (congratulations!) or are a returning student. Maybe you want to try something new.

Enter… Societies! Luckily, Liverpool has something for everyone. From sports to culture, academics to performing arts, volunteering to the most niche of interests, there’s something for everyone to realise they enjoy. Here are just a few that you can join (all for free!!) if you’re feeling a little stuck.

Society Society

If you’re struggling to pick a particular interest, why not join a society dedicated to… we’re actually not quite sure what they’re dedicated to?

Society Society has a big focus on the creative scene in Liverpool, with their socials often being craft nights, small gigs and film nights. It’s a great option if you’re interested in getting involved without committing yourself to one particular activity or subject. It gives you the opportunity to meet lots of other students and get involved in different events, making it a good starting point if you’re still figuring out what you enjoy.

They even have secretaries for hats and scarves (?) and tea. In fact, every society at a British uni should have one x

Kebab Society

Needing absolutely no explanation, Kebab Society is a particularly appealing option for anyone who wishes a kebab halfway through the night was more socially acceptable. It is well-known and well-loved on campus. Furthermore, it’s made a huge impact in the short amount of time it’s been active.

Whether you’re interested in journalism, photography, radio, podcasting or video, it’s a chance to get involved in student media. You do not need to be studying anything related to it. You can try your hand at something new. Also, you can meet other creative students and, importantly, have something to show for your procrastination.

Your school + your sport society

There are so many different societies dedicated to a specific school and sport. For example, School of the Arts netball. Joining societies like these helps you meet people. Not only may they be on your course, but they are doing similar subjects. This is great for when you can pick your modules. Additionally, the modules can be from different subjects in the same school.

The schools also do trips abroad together. So you can always apply for one with your new friends, making it great to widen that social circle.

The Tab

Although we aren’t an official society (as we operate at multiple unis), we couldn’t leave ourselves out. The Liverpool Tab is the perfect choice if your main hobbies currently include scrolling TikTok, having strong opinions and wanting to know what’s going on around campus.

You don’t need any writing experience, and you can get involved as much or as little as you like: from breaking news and student drama to hilarious features about Liverpool life. Plus, it’s a pretty good way to make friends whilst building your CV.

Whether you end up in Heebies til 3AM on a Thursday night dressed as a clown, or deepen your future career opportunities, joining societies means you’re sure to make new friends and connections, and make the most of exactly what the university and the city have to offer.
