Everything going on between Gracie Abrams and Phoebe Bridgers, after *those* savage lyrics

Gracie Abrams and Phoebe Bridgers have never publicly argued, but people are convinced there’s now plenty of awkward lore between them after leaked lyrics from Phoebe’s upcoming album Lost Weekend.

People think one particular lyric is aimed squarely at Gracie, who is now dating Phoebe’s ex-fiancé, Paul Mescal. Throw in years of admiration, alleged references in Gracie’s own music and accusations that she’s borrowed Phoebe’s stage aesthetic, and people are suddenly deep-diving the whole timeline.

The biggest talking point comes from Phoebe’s upcoming third album, Lost Weekend, where one lyric has fans convinced she’s addressing Gracie directly.

On one track, Phoebe sings: “She can pretend to be me // Since she took my place in my bed, on that stage.”

Gracie has been dating Paul Mescal since 2024, after Phoebe and the actor ended their relationship. The “my bed” line is widely being interpreted as a reference to Paul, while “on that stage” has fuelled another long-running conversation.

Phoebe and Paul were together for around two years before splitting in 2022. Their relationship ended amid rumours that Phoebe had already moved on with comedian and musician Bo Burnham, although none of those involved ever confirmed exactly what happened.

Paul later began dating Gracie in 2024. Because of that timeline, people think Phoebe’s leaked lyric is less about Paul himself and more about the woman now dating him.

Part of why the lyric has caused such a stir is because people already believed Gracie had written about Phoebe on The Secret of Us.

In Normal Thing, she sings: “When did you slip through my fingers, did I ever have you? / Was I just a placeholder to fill the hole inside you? / … Nothing left to say ’cause you’re not over her, now, are you?”

Another song that sparked theories was Risk, where Gracie sings: “Know you had a girl, but it didn’t work out / Know you bought a house, but you had to move out…”

The conversation isn’t just about the music. People have pointed out similarities between Gracie’s recent live shows and Phoebe’s signature visual style, particularly the use of cosy bedroom sets and props on stage.

Those comparisons resurfaced immediately after Phoebe’s leaked lyric about someone taking her place “on that stage”, with many interpreting it as another reference to Gracie.

An interaction from 2017 has been dug up, that shows just how far back it goes. Gracie posted a photo of her space-themed bedsheets on Instagram, and Phoebe commented saying she had the exact same sheets. Phoebe has used the sheets in her music videos before, and Gracie also uses them in her stage set-up.

It’s a tiny detail, but people are now treating it as another piece of the ever-growing lore surrounding the pair.
