Trixie and Katya reveal bizarre unaired Drag Race season seven segment with RuPaul

It’s a crime these moments never aired

The gay gods smiled upon us all the day Trixie Mattel and Katya announced they were going to be rewatching and dissecting the entirety of season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race on their podcast. This is heaven on earth to me. I could listen to these two icons discuss Drag Race forever and it’s honestly perfect viewing. Who better to make us howl laughing whilst also spilling real insight into what those episodes were like for those actually living it? Bliss. The juiciest bit in the first episode of course was Trixie and Katya talking about the unaired season seven Drag Race segment we never saw that seemed utterly bizarre – when the queens first met RuPaul and had to do a task the queens have never done since…

‘I was impressed with how much she knew’

Trixie and Katya revealed when they landed in LA they had to actually all record songs with RuPaul. This was in a weird era where RuPaul released two albums called Covergurlz, the first one featuring all the queens of season six and this one with the queens of season seven. They basically had all the queens duetting with RuPaul on new versions of mama’s hits – and every queen in the season got to do it. You can listen to the likes of Sasha Belle doing a song with RuPaul if you so wish. It’s still on Spotify now, but we never saw the filming of it.

“You arrive in LA [to film],” Katya said on the podcast, “But we didn’t go to the studio. We go to another studio, fresh off the plane –”.

“Oh this wasn’t even aired!” Trixie added.

“And we walk into a room. And who walks in with a ten-gallon hat? Ru f*cking Paul! RuPaul walks in, and you’re just like, ‘Huhhh!’” Katya revealed.

Trixie then explained further: “You walk into this room, RuPaul is there, and he just sits next to you and asks you questions about your life? But can I be honest; I was impressed by how much she knew. She knew specific details from my audition video, she knew where I was from. Even though I was terrified, it made me feel very seen.”

They then all had to sing with RuPaul, which is one of the weirdest Drag Race moments ever to remain unaired and Trixie and Katya continued saying “I’d never been in a recording studio, and I’d never sung in my life. At one point [RuPaul] goes: ‘Come on white boy, find the rhythm!’ And I’m doing the theme from Drag U! It was such a bizarre introduction. Nobody ever saw this.

“I can remember her, in the booth with me, singing: ‘It’s a miracle!’ She was incredible. And then it got hot. It was a nightmare.”

Trixie sang Geronimo, if you’re interested.
