Luigi Mangione turned 27 in prison, and this was the sad array of food he ate behind bars

He didn’t get a birthday cake

Luigi Mangione, corporate assassin turned internet folk hero, celebrated his 27th birthday behind bars following the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson back in December.

The curious case of Luigi Mangione will undoubtedly be studied for years after he somehow became the internet’s boyfriend overnight amid alleged sex tapes and dozens of Reddit threads dedicated to him. Twitter, TikTok and Reddit eat up any Luigi updates and quotes – he’s basically the closest thing the Metropolitan Detention Centre has to a Kardashian sister.

After pleading not guilty to the federal murder charge last month, for which U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is seeking the death penalty, Luigi Mangione celebrated his 27th birthday on May 6 – so here’s what he got up to.

What meals did Luigi Mangione eat for his birthday?

Ahead of his trial, which won’t commence until sometime in 2026, Luigi Mangione is being housed in the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, New York, where he celebrated – if you can really call it that – turning 27. According to a report from TMZ, his birthday meal was incredibly depressing.

For breakfast, Luigi was reportedly offered a choice of fruit, cereal, breakfast cake, sugar substitute packets and skim milk. I had literally no clue what breakfast cake was, but according to Google, it’s typically a plain sponge cake with breakfast items such as berries and granola baked into it.

Come lunchtime, Luigi dined on pasta in meat sauce (basically a bolognese), chickpea marinara, whole wheat bread, fruit and a beverage. TMZ also reported spinach, but it’s not clear whether that was in the pasta or just lumped in a pile on his plate.

Dinner was undoubtedly the most questionable array of food, with Luigi Mangione’s birthday meal consisting of a chicken patty sandwich or a chickpea burger. Despite burgers typically coming with fries, he was reportedly offered steamed rice, pinto beans, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, a hamburger bun and a beverage.

He didn’t even get a birthday cake.

On Twitter, people wished the jailed shooter a happy birthday as they reacted to his choice of meals. Prepare yourself, Twitter has never heard of nuance.

“They knew they had to give Luigi Italian food for his b’day,” one person said, referencing Luigi’s Italian heritage.

Another said: “Did a few extra sets of curls in honour of today’s national holiday (it’s Luigi Mangione’s birthday).”

In perhaps the best birthday present he could have asked for, his defence fund reached a staggering $1 million on his big day.
