All the details we know about how the police arrested Luigi Mangione

A McDonald’s employee spotted the suspected shooter

So, police have charged a 26-year-old man called Luigi Mangione with the killing of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Luigi Mangione has also been charged with five other counts. Here are all the details we know about how the police tracked him down in a McDonald’s and arrested him.

The police have been looking for the shooter since last Wednesday

Brian Thompson was shot on 4th December outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. He was on his way to a meeting for UnitedHealthcare investors.

There is lots of CCTV footage of the suspected shooter fleeing the scene. Police believe the suspect got a taxi in the Upper West Side to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station.

The NYPD searched for the suspect for five days. They used dogs, drones, and even scuba divers in Central Park. The FBI offered a $50,000 (£39,140) reward to anyone with information.

So, an employee saw Luigi Mangione sitting in a McDonald’s in Altoona, in Pennsylvania. That’s about 280 miles away from where Brian Thompson was killed. The employee thought this stranger looked similar to the CCTV footage, so contacted the authorities.

The BBC saw the criminal complaint which was filed against Luigi Mangione. Apparently he was sitting at a table at McDonald’s looking at a silver laptop. He was wearing a beanie and a medical mask. He had a backpack.

Police asked him to pull down the face mask, then “immediately recognised” him as a potential suspect. Luigi Mangione showed officers a New Jersey driver’s license with the name Mark Rosario on. Police realised it was a fake.

Officers asked him why he’d lied about his name. According to the criminal complaint, Luigi Mangione said, “I clearly shouldn’t have.” When officers asked if he’d been to New York recently, he “became quiet and started to shake”.

Police handcuffed Mangione and arrested him for providing police with false information.

The police searched Luigi Mangione’s rucksack. He is said to have had a black “ghost gun” – a homemade gun that’s difficult to trace, and is often 3D printed, a 3D printed silencer, six rounds of ammunition, the fake New Jersey ID, a passport, cash, and a three-page handwritten document.

Officials say the manuscript indicated his “motivation and mindset”. The chief of detectives at the NYPD confirmed the writing seemed to suggest “ill will towards corporate America”.

The New York Times reported the writing was critical of healthcare companies for caring more about money than people’s well-being. It allegedly says, “These parasites had it coming” and “I do apologise for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done”. The document apparently doesn’t mention any specific people or UnitedHealthcare.

Luigi Mangione has been formally charged with several crimes

As well as being a suspect in the killing of Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione has been charged with forgery, having a firearm without a lisence, possessing instruments of a crime, tampering with records or identification and providing false identification to the authorities.
