Uni of York ranks 15th in the Times’ Good University Guide 2024

The university was also shortlisted for University of the Year


The University of York has ranked 15th out of 134 UK universities, according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide for 2024. Having ranked 17th in the 2023 league table, York has risen two places and maintained it’s position in the top 20.

York was also one of six universities shortlisted for University of the Year in The Times & The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024, with the title ultimately being awarded to UCL.

The Times Good University Guide is one of the most definitive rankings in the country, assessing 134 UK universities across a variety of fields. Unis are assessed on their teaching quality, student experience, research quality, entry standards, and graduate prospects, among other factors.

According to the guide, 83.1 per cent of Uni of York students receive a First or 2:1 in their degree, and the uni scored 73.6 per cent for student experience. Teaching quality scored 75.9 per cent, and graduate prospects are at 84.4 per cent.

Ranking 15th, York earned a total score of 782, an improvement from 2023 which saw York ranked 17th.

The university also ranked 11th out of the 24 Russell Group Universities, and notably ranked ninth in research quality, with 93 per cent of its work being rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the latest Research Excellence Framework.

Regionally, York came second to Durham Uni when ranked against the northern universities, and was ranked as the best university in Yorkshire, followed by Sheffield, Leeds, Hull, Huddersfield, York St John, and Sheffield Hallam.
