Hangover Breakfast: Filling Station

We’re sending Alison Gilchrist around Stirling to find the best place to get a breakfast when you wake up feeling sorry for yourself. This week, she tries Filling Station.

This time I decided I would approach my mission differently on the hunt for the best hangover breakfast. Foolishly, with no forward planning I left early to find food in an attempt to eat before class. This did not work out so well for me.

It turns out almost nowhere (excluding where I’ve already reviewed) is open early for breakfast. After spending half an hour searching for somewhere good I gave up and settled for Filling Station on Dumbarton Road.

Pricey: Compared to previous breakfasts £7.45 is a scandal

Having heard varying reviews about the place I was very reluctant, and rightly so! Take a tip from a foodie: if a place is empty then it’s a bad sign. I sauntered in regardless.

The menu was almost identical to Frankie and Benny’s, serving up a British take on American diner food, and I was equally unhappy with my breakfast.

I ordered pancakes, bacon, and maple syrup (£5.95) thinking what can really go wrong with that? Well the pancakes were swimming in the cold horribly sweet syrup, claiming to be maple syrup. The whole plate was cold and very unappetising and the pancakes were chewy. Being one of the most expensive places I have eaten breakfast in Stirling I was expecting more for my money. They also serve up a traditional breakfast if you’re willing to pay a whopping £7.45!

“Very unappetising”: bacon and pancakes

Motown’s finest played through the speakers. Hey, Stirling – what is it with all the Motown whilst I eat my breakfast? It happened at Dempsey’s, too. The restaurant is cosy and inviting, perfect for calming hungover ailments. Sitting in a booth provides you with a perfect people watching position if you need to distract yourself from last night’s antics. If only the food complimented the surroundings.

Don’t throw your money away at Filling Station, your hangover would be better served by a lie-in.
