A new plan to turn the Victory Centre in Portswood into a Jobcentre has been confirmed by Southampton City Council.

Previously, the large building named the Broadway which dominates Portswood High Street was a cinema, before becoming a Mecca Bingo hall more than 40 years ago.

Relatively recent changes saw it become the Victory Centre that it is today.

It can now be revealed that Southampton City Council have new plans for the building, and that it will become a Jobcentre Plus.

Local councillor Nadir Novasin told the Soton Tab:

Following clinics with locals, it became clear that an easily accessible centre for finding work would be a large step forward for the Portswood community.

On top of this, the overall poor economic climate requires us as a body to do all we can in facilitating our unemployed constituents’ search for work.

Open council plans for the refurbishment are not yet available, but the Soton Tab will keep you updated as we find out more.
