Deer put down by vet after attacking man in Wollaton Park

The park was closed for two hours after the incident occurred

A deer had to be put down by a vet after attacking a man in Wollaton Park.

The man involved was walking near the golf course on Sunday morning, when a male red stag was reported to have approached him, and then attacked. The man was taken to hospital as a precaution, however his injuries are not said to be serious. The deer was then put down by a vet.

The incident occurred on Sunday 16th October, and the park was closed for two hours as a result. This occurred during the deer’s “rutting season”, in which deers are known to be more aggressive, and the public are warned to not approach them.

A spokesperson for Nottingham City Council said: “The visitor was taken to hospital as a precaution and we understand that, thankfully, their injuries are not serious.

“A vet was called to put down the deer shortly afterwards before the park reopened to the public.”

The incident has led to calls for a security review at the popular Nottingham park, with the Labour representative for Wollaton West, Steve Battlemuch saying: “As a local councillor, I was in touch with the management of Wollaton Park [on Sunday] for a full briefing and called for a full security review to take place this week between the park and the golf course to ensure all appropriate lessons can be learned.

“I also praised the quick actions of the park rangers and management on Sunday morning who dealt with a difficult situation quickly and efficiently.”
